Once Again about the Vyg River Name
Citation information: Voprosy onomastiki (Problems of Onomastics), 2009, Issue 7, pp. 74–80 (in Russian)
Abstract: The author critically discusses the etymology of the Vyg River name suggested by Irma Mullonen. Taking into account the specificity of language contacts in this area and the physical properties of the named object, the author suggests a correlation between the analyzed name and Sami viekkâ, Kildin Sami vīgg, Ter Sami vikk ‘large, strong’ (< *vēkę).
Key words: Russian language, Finno-Ugric languages, Sami language, toponymy, hydronymy, Vyg River, White Sea coast, Finno-Ugric substrate, etymology, language contacts
