Archaic Toponymy with Prefix po-/pa- on the North-West of Russia

Abstract: The article analyses specific character of Balto-Slavic toponym-forming models *pa- + hydronym = oekonym and *pa- + hydronym = hydronym. Place names of given type are registered in the Russian Northwest more often than in other parts of Slavic region. Such names of villages and rivers as Pokholovye, Posyasye, Pasholonok, Ponerlitsa, Poneretka, Porusya, etc. are etymologized in the article.
