Abstract: The article takes a broad perspective of the book under review: first, by regarding it contextually, as part of the author’s research activity, and then by putting it against the background of the modern hydronymic science. In terms of genre, this work is a collection of names of the Msta river basin that contains a catalogue, alphabetic indexes of hydronyms and other toponyms, and also a reverse index of hydronyms. The reviewer analyses the structure of the catalogue, its graphical layout, as well as its ability to represent the systemic ties between hydronyms and the related oikonyms. It should be emphasized that apart from catalogue as such, the book includes a series of studies in hydronymy based on its data. Thus, a separate essay deals with the names of the Msta rapids, with their motivational analysis provided. It also covers transonymization patterns, with one such model and one derivational tool described in three essays devoted to the analysis of hydronyms in the motivational and derivational aspects. The one of most interest, however, is the essay focused on the catalogue’s functional significance and the microsystems of hydronyms it helps to reveal, including the localization of toponyms and the reconstruction of untestified hydronyms and oikonyms. On the whole, the book is regarded as a serious advancement in the study of hydronymy.
